Personal Development
At Gusford Primary School, the personal development of every child lies at the heart of our ethos.
We believe that children must feel safe, secure and happy before they can achieve academically. Our approach to personal development is rooted in creating a nurturing environment where pupils are valued as individuals, supported to develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self-worth.
From the moment pupils join Gusford, they are welcomed into a caring and inclusive community. Staff build positive relationships with pupils and their families, ensuring that emotional wellbeing is prioritised. The school’s pastoral systems are proactive, enabling early identification of barriers to learning and providing timely support. Through carefully planned assemblies, class discussions, and wellbeing sessions, pupils learn to express their feelings, manage emotions and develop empathy for others.
The curriculum at Gusford extends well beyond the academic. We offer a broad range of activities and enrichment opportunities designed to develop pupils’ interests, talents, and cultural capital. From sports clubs and creative arts to music, environmental initiatives, and leadership roles, every child is encouraged to explore new experiences and discover what motivates them. These opportunities promote teamwork, perseverance and aspiration, supporting pupils to become well-rounded and confident young people.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing pupils’ character and values. Respect, kindness, and responsibility are promoted through the school’s behaviour expectations and celebrated in daily practice. Pupils are taught to make positive choices, to respect diversity, and to understand the importance of equality and inclusion. Through personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education, as well as relationships and sex education (RSE), children learn how to stay safe—both in person and online—and how to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and relationships.
Gusford is proud of its role at the heart of the local community. The school actively fosters a sense of belonging and civic responsibility through strong partnerships with local organisations, charities and families. Pupils take part in community events, fundraising initiatives and environmental projects that help them to understand their role in contributing positively to society. Visitors, workshops, and trips enable children to engage with real-world contexts, developing curiosity, cultural awareness and respect for others.

Leadership opportunities such as school councillors, playground leaders, well-being ambassadors, and eco-champions empower pupils to have a voice and take responsibility within the school. These experiences help them to develop leadership skills, independence, and a sense of pride in their community.
Ultimately, Gusford Primary School’s approach to personal development ensures that pupils leave as confident, caring and capable individuals. They are equipped not only with the knowledge and skills needed for the next stage of their education, but also with the values and character to thrive in the wider world. By placing wellbeing and belonging at the centre of all we do, Gusford nurtures children who are happy, secure, and ready to achieve their full potential.
